Fun Fact: July 4
Not only was the United States born on the 4th of July, but so was the “American Top 40 Countdown” hosted by Casey Kasem. The first show aired today in 1970 and is still heard all across America and in dozens of countries around the world. A musical-themed promotion is in order to celebrate the month.

July 1: Battle of Gettysburg Anniversary
- The war’s turning point
Today in 1863 the Battle of Gettysburg began when General Robert E. Lee and the Confederate Army charged the Union Army commanded by General George Meade. The three-day battle was the bloodiest of all encounters in the Civil War and ultimately led to the Confederate Army defeat.

July 1: Princess Diana’s Birthday - Candle in the wind
Encourage clients and friends to remember Princess Diana on what would have been her 47th birthday. Make a donation in her honor or sponsor a non-profit organization. It’s a perfect way to honor her legacy and show clients you care about others.

July 1: First U.S. Zoo Anniversary - Lions and tigers and bears
Today in 1874 America’s first zoo opened in Philadelphia. The price of admission was 25 cents for adults and 10 cents for children. More than 1,000 animals were on display and over 3,000 guests came to the event. Treat special clients to zoo passes or donate to an animal-friendly charity.

July 2: Amelia Earhart Disappears - Fearless woman
In 1937 aviator Amelia Earhart planned a trip around the world that would have been the longest airplane trip ever made. Yet with just 7,000 miles to go (after completing 22,000) navigators lost contact with her craft and the pilot was never heard from again.

July 4: Independence Day - Happy Birthday America!
Fly the flag, fire up the grill and buy some fireworks. It’s America’s birthday and time for everyone to celebrate. A pre-Fourth of July party at the office would be appropriate.

July 5: Bikini Debuts - Itsy bitsy teeny weenie…
Although it wasn’t a yellow polka dot bikini that debuted today in 1946, the bikini still managed to stun cultures around the globe. Americans were particularly repulsed by the design, yet it became a staple in women’s fashion just 10 years later.

July 6: Name that Tune TV Premiere - I can name it in two notes …
Today in 1953, Name That Tune made its TV debut. Have your employees been working really hard? Reward them with a little office fun. Play a Name That Tune game or hold a karaoke contest. Don’t forget the prizes.

July 11: E.B. White Born - Charlotte’s Web
Today in 1899, E.B. White was born in Mount Vernon, NY. Besides being a prolific children’s writer, White also published a writer’s style guide called The Elements of Style. Imprinted bookmarks are a great way to celebrate with employees and clients.

July 14: Tom Carvel Born - Free ice cream!
The inventor of the soft serve ice cream machine, Tom Carvel was born today in 1906. Help clients and employees beat the heat with ice cream and logoed scoops.

July 17: Disneyland Opens - America’s first theme park
In 1955, Disneyland opened in Anaheim, CA. Spoil clients or sales stars with tickets to a nearby theme park.

July 19: Elvis Presley’s First Single Released - “That’s Alright Mama”
Music lovers around the world appreciate Elvis Presley’s contribution to the world of Rock N’ Roll. Celebrate Elvis’ milestone by sending clients and prospects free music download cards, MP3 players and iPod accessories.

July 21: Ernest Hemingway’s Birthday - Short and sweet
Nobel-Prize winning novelist Ernest Hemingway is world-renowned for his simplistic writing style which he adopted in his early years writing for a newspaper in Kansas City. Following the advice of the paper’s stylebook, Hemingway, “Used short sentences. Used short first paragraphs. Used vigorous English. And was positive, not negative.” Today, Hemingway remains one of America’s literary greats.

July 22: Pied Piper of Hamelin Annivesrsary - Maybe …
According to legend dating back to 1376, a pied piper piped the rats out of rodent-infested Hamelin, Germany and into the Weser River. He was also said to then lead all the children into a hole, never to be seen again. Other accounts date the incident back to 1274.

July 24: Minimum Wage Rises - Movin’ on up…
Today the federal minimum wage rate will rise from $5.85 to $6.55. Send top clients reminders of the change well in advance.
